January 16, 2005 13:42 - Brand Drug Prices Rise Faster Than Generics

The US Government Accounting Office (GAO) has released a new study. The data collected from patient assistance programs from January 2000 through June 2004 was analyzed and reported to Congress.

Encompassing 4 & 1/2 years, the study found that the retail price for 52 commonly used brand new drugs increased 3 times faster than price increases for 47 commonly used generic drugs. Over the 4 & 1/2 year duration of the study, retail price for the brand drugs rose by 26.4%, or 5.5% a year. Over the same time period, the prices charged for the generic drugs rose by just 8.3% or 1.8% per year.

This would explain a large part of the debate over exorbitant prescription prices in the United States. Or would the brand drug manufacturers have us believe that their expenses increase that much each year?

Speaking from my own experience, at the retail pharmacy where I work, we do not change generic prices unless our cost increases. Usually we only change then if the price increase is significant.

When will the United States CONgress stop tolerating and even encouraging Brand drug company greed? Write them and express your disapproval if you want it stopped.

January 16, 2005 15:39 - CIPA List of Safe Canadian Pharmacies Adds to Controversy

A new list of safe Canadian pharmacies published by Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA) has stirred up new controversy within the US pharmacy community.

The officials at CIPA want to minimize the fear and uncertainty US seniors experience when they buy their prescriptions online for the first time.

CIPA is a Winnipeg-based mail-order pharmacy group. CIPA compiled their "Safe List" to help US consumers. You can also find a "recommended Pharmacies List" at Canadian Online Prescription Guide.com. This is a list of pharmacies that meet all of our criteria.
